FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — 24 MAY 2026
The Assyrian National Council – Australia Inc. (ANCA) and The Young Assyrians (TYA) will host the Policy Summit on the Future of the Nineveh Plains at Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday, 1 July 2026 (Assyria Day).
The invitation-only Summit will bring together Australian policymakers, academics, heads of civil society, community representatives, and key stakeholders to engage in informed discussion surrounding the future of the Nineveh Plains and the ongoing challenges facing Indigenous Assyrian communities in Iraq.
This initiative forms part of the ANCA and TYA’s broader advocacy efforts to elevate awareness of the historical, cultural, and human rights concerns impacting Assyrians in the Middle East, while fostering meaningful dialogue on long-term stability, security, governance, preservation of identity, and regional coexistence.
The Nineveh Plains, located in northern Iraq, remains one of the most historically significant regions for the Assyrian people and continues to hold deep cultural, linguistic, and spiritual importance for the community.
The Summit will feature keynote presentations, panel discussions, and policy-focused dialogue addressing themes including:
Indigenous Assyrian rights and cultural preservation
Regional stability and security
Social cohesion and community rebuilding
Youth empowerment and civic participation
Economic development and sustainability
Australia’s role in supporting vulnerable and persecuted communities internationally
While attendance is strictly by invitation only, the organisers will issue reports as well as an Impact Report.
Further announcements regarding participating speakers and programme details will be released in the coming weeks.
